Handyman in Merkel, TX
Merkel is a Taylor County town of about 2,500 people, roughly seventeen miles west of Abilene on Interstate 20 and US 84. It started around 1880 with the Texas and Pacific Railway, when it was known as Windmill Town, and was renamed Merkel in 1881 for S. M. Merkel, an early settler from Germany. The first general store and post office followed in 1882 and 1883, and the town grew as a farming and ranching center for the western part of the county. Its houses reflect that steady, unhurried history. Close to the old downtown and the railroad there are early twentieth-century frame homes, some on pier-and-beam foundations with tall ceilings, wood floors and original windows. Around them are brick and frame ranch homes from the 1950s through the 1970s, and on the edges of town and out in the county you'll find newer brick homes, manufactured homes and houses on acreage with barns, shops and long fences. Merkel's semiarid climate runs a little drier than Abilene's, with hot summers, steady wind across open farmland and the same spring hail and clay soil that keep the whole region busy with repairs.
Merkel's daily life runs along I-20 and the frontage road, through the old downtown blocks near the railroad, and out to the schools, where the Badgers draw the town together on Friday nights. Families commute to Abilene and Dyess, farm and ranch in the surrounding county, or run small businesses in town. Mulberry and cottonwood shade some older yards, but much of the land around Merkel is open cropland and pasture, so wind moves through unchecked and dust rides along with it. Spring storms that form over the plains to the west often reach Merkel before Abilene, bringing hail and sharp gusts. Rural properties around town mean longer fence lines, detached garages and shops, outdoor water lines and porches that face the weather, and we bring what we need to handle all of it in a single trip.

Jobs we handle a lot around Merkel
In Merkel's older homes, we fix doors and windows that bind as the house shifts, patch plaster and drywall cracks, repair or replace worn faucets, toilets, shutoff valves and supply lines, and update light fixtures and ceiling fans, with our licensed electricians handling the wiring. In ranch-style homes, it's the usual West Texas list: leaning fences and sagging gates after wind, loose or hail-dented gutters and downspouts, garage and entry doors out of adjustment, and pressure washing driveways and siding coated with dust. Newer homes bring TV mounting, furniture assembly, shelving and smart thermostats. Before winter, we insulate outdoor pipes, hose bibs and well lines, check crawlspace plumbing under pier-and-beam houses and seal drafts, because a long hard freeze like February 2021 can catch rural plumbing unprepared.
Questions we hear in Merkel
Is Merkel too far out for you?
Not at all. It's well within our service area, and we come out regularly. If you have several items, put them on one list and we'll plan a single visit for all of them, which keeps things efficient for both of us. A few photos sent ahead usually let us give you a firm price before we drive out.
Our old farmhouse has original windows and doors that stick. Can you fix them without replacing everything?
Usually, yes. Old wood doors and windows can often be made to work smoothly again: we adjust or replace hinges, plane edges that bind, free painted-shut sashes, replace worn latches and weatherstripping and re-glaze or caulk where needed. We'll tell you honestly if a piece is too far gone, but a lot of original woodwork just needs care and adjustment.
Can you add a ceiling fan to a room that only has a light?
Usually, yes. We check the ceiling box and framing, install a fan-rated box and brace where needed, and our licensed electricians make the wiring connections, including a separate switch or a wall control if you want the fan and light on separate controls. In older Merkel homes with tall ceilings, we choose the right downrod so the fan sits at a useful height.
Can you help get a rental property ready for new tenants?
Yes. We patch and touch up walls, fix doors, locks and blinds, repair faucets and toilets, replace broken fixtures and outlet covers, and pressure wash entries and walkways. Send us the list and the deadline, and we'll quote it as one job.
