Handyman in Clyde, TX

Clyde is a Callahan County town of a little under 4,000 people, about fifteen miles east of Abilene on Interstate 20, between Abilene and Baird. It grew out of a Texas and Pacific Railway construction camp in 1880, got its post office the next year and was chartered in 1907. Early on its orchards and gardens earned it the nickname Little California, and oil production that began in the 1920s helped carry the local economy for decades. Today it's a mix of longtime families and commuters who like small-town schools and a short drive to Abilene. The houses follow that history. Near the old downtown and the railroad you'll find early twentieth-century frame houses, many on pier-and-beam foundations with wood floors that creak and doors that seldom stay square for long. Around them sit brick ranch homes from the 1950s through the 1980s, and on the edges of town and out toward Lake Clyde there are newer brick homes, homes on acreage and plenty of manufactured homes on rural lots. Clyde sits a little higher than Abilene, on the edge of the Callahan Divide, and catches the same hot summers, strong spring winds and hail that run along the I-20 corridor.

Clyde's rhythm is a small town's rhythm. Downtown has been spruced up in recent years, the library and city park sit close by, and the school district, home of the Bulldogs, with its newer campuses and stadium, is the center of a lot of community life. Lake Clyde, the city's reservoir south of town, draws people for fishing and quiet evenings. I-20 runs along the north side, with the frontage road carrying local traffic between the exits, and Baird, the county seat, is a few miles farther east. Much of the land around town is ranch and pasture country with oak, mesquite and cedar, which means leaves and seed in gutters, limbs on fences after a storm, and dust that settles on everything when the wind picks up across a dry field. Older homes here often have detached garages, storage buildings and long fences, and we bring what's needed to handle them.

What Clyde neighbors book most

Clyde is a straight shot east on I-20 for us, and we like to group jobs in town so a small repair doesn't have to wait.

Jobs we handle a lot around Clyde

In Clyde's older homes, we see doors and windows that bind as the pier-and-beam framing moves, plaster and drywall cracks over openings, worn faucets, toilets and shutoff valves in original bathrooms, and dated light fixtures and ceiling fans that owners want swapped for better ones, with our licensed electricians making the connections. Brick ranch houses bring their own list: cracked or sagging soffits, loose gutters, garage doors and entry doors out of adjustment, and fences leaning after a windstorm. Newer and rural homes keep us busy with TV mounting, furniture assembly, shelving in garages and shops, and pressure washing driveways and porches that collect red dust and mildew. Before winter, many Clyde homeowners have us insulate outdoor pipes and hose bibs and check crawlspace plumbing, especially after the February 2021 freeze showed how vulnerable those lines can be.

Questions we hear in Clyde

Our older Clyde house has floors that slope and doors that rub. Can you help?

We can make the doors work again: adjusting hinges, resetting strikes, planing edges that rub and fixing latches so they close cleanly. Sloping floors in a pier-and-beam house usually mean the piers or beams need attention, which is work for a foundation contractor. We'll point that out honestly, and once the house is leveled we're glad to come back and readjust every door and patch the cracks that shifting left behind.

Do you make the trip out to Clyde for small jobs?

Yes. A single small repair is fine, though if you have several things on your list it makes sense to do them together, and we try to schedule Clyde visits on the same day so our time on the road stays reasonable. Send photos ahead and we can usually give you a firm price before we head out.

Can you fix wood floors that squeak in an old pier-and-beam house?

Often, yes. Squeaks usually come from subfloor boards that have loosened from the joists as the house moved over the years. Where we can reach the floor from the crawlspace, we shim and fasten it from below; where we can't, we use trim-head screws from above and fill the holes. It won't change a floor that slopes, but it makes a quieter house.

Do you handle hail-damaged gutters and screens?

Yes. We replace dented or split gutter sections and downspouts, reattach gutters that pulled loose, and replace torn window screens. If your roof also needs an insurance claim, we can take photos of what we see so you have them for the adjuster.
